Dump Trailer Design
Dump trailer designs are always evolving and changing. The reason for this is competition, as manufacturers try to implement features in their trailers that are not present in others.
Smooth Sidewalls
The smooth sidewalls have increased the payload capacity. The sidewalls have also limited the air drag in the trailer. These are installed utilizing hollow-core extrusions.
Smooth Flooring
One of the features that have been added in some trailers is smooth flooring. This is the logical next step after the implementation of smooth sidewalls in and out of the trailer. The smooth flooring is implemented using the same procedure as the sidewalls.
Internal stiffeners are in the extended wall panel. This allows for a wider and thinner sidewall. In some cases integral crosschambers are being implemented as well.
The dump trailer design is configured by having extruded panels 3 inches deep running laterally along the trailer. This allows the stiffeners to support the payload every six inches.
The stiffeners are set at the bottom and top. This allows them to support a larger area. Because the floor and sidewalls are totally integrated, the robustness of the unit is increased.
Smooth Bottoms
Many trailers also have smooth bottoms. This is intended to augment the aerodynamics of the structure. Improved aerodynamics results in lower fuel consumption. This in turn results in more savings.
The crosschambers are also concealed. This prevents them from gathering ice, snow and other debris. The result is lower maintenance. These designs usually have the tailgate made utilizing a vertical hollow-core. Like the other components, these are extruded.
Low Weight, Huge Payload
Many trailers are now being designed to carry as much load as possible while keeping the weight down. Today there are trailers that weigh 8,000 lbs that can handle 60,000 lb payloads.
Other Concepts
Some trailers have changed their frame design too. The extrusions now come with a fillet on the outer portion of the web-flange juncture. Close to the top is a 45 degree welded plate. This will add support to the outside ends.
The construction of most hollow-core extrusions is done using friction-stir welding. This is a process used in aerospace design. It is a complex procedure that results in a stronger trailer.
As time goes by, expect the dump trailer designs to improve even more. In the end, this will only mean good news for consumers as their workload will be lessened. Due to competition, expect the prices to go down as well.
