A heavy duty dump truck is used for various construction tasks and assorted off-road jobs. If you are applying as a driver, knowing how to operate these vehicles is a must.

Step 1

Adjust the seat so you can get to all the pedals and gears. Position the mirrors so the view to the rear of the truck bed is clear.

Step 2

As you turn the ignition key, step on the clutch and brake. Set the shifter to first gear. Let go of the clutch slowly. Do this as you put pressure on the gas pedal.

As soon as the truck starts to roll, shift away from the first gear. When you reach 10 to 15 mph, shift to third gear. You only need to move to fourth gear if you will go over 35 mph.

Note:

Make certain the bed of the heavy duty dump truck is set down before you start driving. This is necessary even if you are not departing from the site. The reason is that accidents can occur if the bed is positioned up.

For example, low cables may get entangled. Debris in the truck may get tossed out and hit someone. When backing up your truck, having a watcher is hghly recommended.

Step 3

Take the truck to a level spot. You can also put it in a bit of an uphill spot provided the vehicle is pointed up. Get out of the truck. Unhook the tailgate. Go back to the cab. Grab the hand lever (this is next to the stick shift) to release the truck bed.

Step 4

Hit the button that begins the hydraulic motion to raise the truck bed. This will get rid of the load. Set the truck into low gear. If the load is stuck at the tailgate, move the truck forward at slow speeds.

Step 5

When you drive the truck, make certain the load has a cover. This is to prevent any debris from going off and accidentally hitting someone. Drive under the speed limit; these vehicles are not meant to speed down the road. Go slow when going over curves. If you drive at top speed, the truck might tip over.

It should be stressed that driving heavy duty dump trucks requires a CDL (commercial driver’s license). It is essential that you enroll at a truck driving school so you become familiar with the basic operations of this vehicle.
